Get Help for Mental Illness

Minds Connected is an online network that connects you to evidence-informed interventions, key resources, and a community of local professionals working to improve mental health right here in Lambton.

Mental illnesses are common – 1 in 3 Canadians will be diagnosed with a mental illness in their lifetime¹. There is no one cause of mental illness – it is often the result of many factors in a person’s life.

Mental illness can be treated. Many different types of supports have been shown to improve outcomes, reduce symptoms, and help people lead satisfying, productive lives. It’s important to seek help from a mental health professional who could recommend:

  • Self-guided supports
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy or dialectic behavioural therapy
  • Peer support
  • Group therapy
  • Medication

Even though most people benefit from the help they receive, many people don’t seek help at all.  84% of Lambton residents said they felt comfortable speaking with their family doctor about mental health but only 27% had done so².  People may not seek treatment because they:

  • Feel shame or stigma
  • Have limited access to mental health services
  • Fear that they will lose their rights or privacy
  • Don’t know where to get help
  • Don’t think they can be helped
  • Don’t realize they need help

Like physical illnesses, mental illnesses can be treated. Seek support if you notice your mental health is impacting your daily life – you deserve help. If you’re worried about someone you know, you can help someone in distress.
