Cancer in Lambton County
Cancer is a complex group of diseases where abnormal cells grow and spread in the body. Today, many cancers are managed as chronic conditions, meaning people may live with them for long periods thanks to improved screening, early detection, and treatments. Common cancers include lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, and melanoma.
The likelihood of developing cancer may be influenced by risk factors:
- behavioural (tobacco-use, alcohol-use, healthy behaviours for kids – nutrition, physical activity, sun exposure)
- environmental (health hazards – air and water quality, extreme temperatures, indoor environmental hazards – radon)
- genetic
- infectious (HPV school immunization)
- screening and early detection (cancer prevention)
