Healthy hygiene habits prevent the spread of germs. Proper hand hygiene (i.e. washing your hands correctly) is the best way to protect yourself and others from harmful germs, which keeps you healthy. Everyone should practice these healthy habits.
Germs are microbes (or microscopic organisms) and they are present almost everywhere. The two most common types of germs are bacteria and viruses. Most microbes are harmless and some are even beneficial. However, there are some harmful bacteria and viruses that infect people to make them sick. For example, many Canadians are familiar with the influenza, or “flu” virus.
Harmful germs don’t just want to infect one person; they want to infect many people. Germs spread directly from person to person (usually by people’s hands) and also indirectly, when someone touches a surface or object that is contaminated with germs. Certain people, including young children, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions such as a weakened immune system, are more at risk of getting a serious illness after coming into contact with these harmful germs.
Healthy Habits to Stop the Spread of Germs:
- Wash your hands
- Cover your coughs and sneezes
- Stay home if you are sick
- Get immunized
