The Food Handler Certification

Food Handler Certification provides the knowledge to handle food safely and prevent foodborne illness. Training and exam options with Lambton Public Health include in-class training and a certification or re-certification exam. 

Certification is valid for five (5) years.

In-Person Class

Lambton Public Health provides Food Handler Certification courses delivered by our certified Public Health Inspectors. The classes provide an opportunity to learn the course curriculum, discuss examples and questions, and prepare the student to write the exam on the same day. 

  • One-day course from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
  • Cost: $40

Self Study and Other Options

You can study the course material at home and register with Lambton Public Health to complete the certification exam. Download the Ontario Ministry of Health – Food Handler Training Manual or access the e-learning course from Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. 

In Good Hands is an approved online safe food handler course that was developed by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. This course is self-directed and includes an online exam. 

Certification from any other Ontario Public Health Unit will also be accepted. 
Other training and certification options are listed on the Ministry of Health website, which includes approved commercial programs.  

Certification Exam  

Certification or re-certification is achieved when a minimum grade of 70% or higher is achieved on the exam. The exam can be taken by an individual that completes a self-study or alternative training course or has been previously trained and certified. 

  • A 2-hour block is scheduled to complete 50 multiple-choice questions. 
  • Cost: $10
