Measles
Measles is a serious respiratory infection that is highly contagious. The measles virus can remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. People can become infected if they breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth. Symptoms of measles can include fever, a red blotchy rash, red watery eyes, and cough.
Patients with suspected measles should be immediately isolated in a negative-pressure room with the door closed. If you do not have one, the patient should wear a surgical mask and be placed in a single room with the door closed. Because measles virus can remain airborne for two hours, no other patient should use the room for at least two hours after.
If measles is suspected or diagnosed, completion of the HCP Investigation & Reporting form is required and should be faxed by the same day as the initial patient visit to Lambton Public Health (fax: 519-383-7092).
Note: If you require assistance or have questions related to reporting and/or your notification is reported after hours or on weekends, please call Lambton Public Health at 519-383-8331.
