October: Active Transportation
Suggested newsletter/web copy:
October is Walk or Wheel to School Month. Making active transportation part of a child’s daily routine can support health, independence, and connection to the community.
Families can support active transportation by:
- Exploring a new walking route to school together
- Walking part of the way to school and encouraging children to complete the final stretch independently when appropriate
- Using a “Drive to 5” approach by parking a short distance away and walking the rest of the route
Even small changes can help increase daily physical activity and reduce traffic congestion around schools.
October: Vision Health Matters
Suggested newsletter/web copy:
October is Children’s Vision Month, a reminder that healthy vision plays an important role in learning, development, and overall well-being.
Many vision concerns can go unnoticed, which is why regular eye exams are important for identifying and addressing concerns early.
Families can support their child’s vision health by:
- Scheduling regular eye exams with an optometrist
- Encouraging breaks from screens and close-up activities
- Supporting outdoor play and active time
OHIP covers annual eye exams for children and youth 19 years of age and younger. Eligible Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten students may also receive free eyeglasses through the Eye See…Eye Learn program.
